The Milbank Speech and Debate team ended its regular debate season this past weekend by accomplishing the unheard feat of winning both the Lincoln-Douglas and the Public Forum divisions in the ‘A’ school bracket of the SDHSAA State Debate and IE Tournament held at Brookings High School.
Max Schuelke brought home the Lincoln-Douglas first place plaque winning his final of five rounds with a 3-2 ballot against a Sturgis Brown debater.
The public forum team of Qualon Grant and Cameron Graham earned their first place trophy after a long day of eight rounds. They moved to the octofinals round with a 3-2 record and won every round after that to make the stage and claim their first place trophy with a 5-0 decision in the final round against a Spearfish debater.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Bri Hicks reached the semi-final round in Lincoln-Douglas and placed third in that division.
These debaters plus other team members Keira Steffen, Miriam Del Angel Chavez, Ruth Lois Gomez, Carlos Olivares Zuniga, Charlotte Street, and Addison Brown, garnered enough points in their events to place Milbank third overall in the A division against Spearfish, Sturgis, Douglas, Beresford, Dakota Valley, Tea, Vermillion, Sioux Falls Christian, Lennox, and Tripp-Delmont.
There aren’t enough words to express how proud I am.
